Sandra Byrd Lawson

SLawsonSandra Byrd Lawson is the author of the Mila Denton chapter book series. She grew up in rural Kentucky and just like Mila Denton, she attended Garrett Elementary. As a little girl, she loved reading all types of books and exploring the hills and woods surrounding her home. After practicing dental hygiene for more than 25 years, she retired and began following her dream of writing for children. Sandra is married to Tony, her high school sweetheart. They have one daughter, a son-in-law, and two granddogs. Sandra lives in rural Oklahoma, has a spoiled-rotten dog (is there any other kind?) and a very vocal cat. She is a member of the Society for Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators and Oklahoma Writers Federation, Inc.  In her free time, she enjoys being outdoors, sewing, and satisfying her junk food addiction. The Mila (pronounced My-luh) Denton Chapter book series is a humorous set of books about the difficulties of being a first grader. Trouble seems to follow Mila where ever she goes. This series is appropriate for ages 6 and up. Eventhough a child may not be able to read entirely on his own, chapter books are excellent for read aloud by teachers and parents. One or two chapters at a time help children build vocabulary, retain and comprehend the story, and relate to the character’s experience. Most children at this age level prefer books in a series so they see the same characters book after book. Just like adults relate to a favorite television series, children come to love book characters and feel a definite connection to them. Check out Mila’s adventures with your little one!
